Crystal Maxwell, MD, MBA, Medical Director
Dr. Crystal Maxwell joined Sandhills Medical Foundation, Inc. in August 2010 and serves as a Family Physician and the Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Maxwell graduated from West Marion High School in Mississippi as valedictorian and went on to receive her B.S. with honors from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. She completed her medical studies at University Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, TN and her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Tennessee – Jackson program. She holds Medical Licenses in South Carolina and Tennessee. Dr. Maxwell’s area of expertise is in Family Medicine.
James Smith, MD, FAAP
Sites: Lugoff and Sumter
Dr. James Smith is a board-certified Pediatrician who loves serving his community. He graduated Suma Cum Laude from Northern Arizona University, where he attained dual degrees in both psychology and zoology. He received his medical training at the University of Arizona where he attended both Medical School and Residency.
Dr. Smith moved from Arizona to be closer to family. He is proud to be a husband and father of two young sons.
Nigel E. Taylor, MD
Dr. Nigel E. Taylor is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. He graduated from Jamaica’s most prestigious high school, Campion College, leaving as the Head of the Student Government. He moved on to the University of The West Indies where he completed a Double Major in Biochemistry and Zoology graduating with Honors. From there Nigel completed his Medical Degree in 2000 (also at the University Of The West Indies) and proceeded to do post graduate studies in Family Medicine at the University of Connecticut where he served as Co-Chief resident in his final year (2006). Dr. Taylor’s interests include Sports Medicine and Medical Imaging. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Ultrasound from The Michener Institute of Canada (2016). A former Jamaica National Under 17 soccer player he is now involved in coaching and holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) B-license. Nigel is married to Angela Case-Taylor, a pharmaceutical marketing executive, and they have two children Alexander and Savannah. He has served as a Family Physician in Connecticut, South Carolina and Jamaica.
Brian Scott, MD
Dr. Brian Scott joined the Sandhills Medical Foundation team in 2016.
Matthew Johnson, DO
Dr. Matthew Johnson joined Sandhills Medical Foundation, Inc. in August 2017. He is a native of Greeneville, TN and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he obtained a Bachelors in Microbiology. He then went on to the Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA for medical school. He completed his internship and residency in Family Medicine at Palmetto Health/USC in Columbia, SC where he served as chief resident during his final year. Dr. Johnson resides in Forest Acres with his wife, Danielle, who is also a physician, and their daughter Eleanor. He enjoys spending time with his family and their two dogs, Rupert and Maggie. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, road biking, and being outdoors. He is looking forward to working to make our community healthier.
Sharon Browning, MD

Dr. Sharon Browning joined the Sandhills Medical Foundation, Inc. team in 2017. She is from New Jersey and completed a medical degree at the American University of the Caribbean. She also attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham to complete a residency and served as chief resident her last 2 years. She practiced in rural Alabama before moving to Nashville, TN where she had a solo practice for 10 years. Her husband relocated to Charlotte and she missed rural medicine. So after 2 ½ years in Lancaster, SC, she stated, “I am now here ready to be a part of the Sandhills family.” She has been married to Russ for 19 years and have 2 children. Jordan is a typical crazy teenage girl who is a competitive swimmer. Aaron is an insane preteen boy who plays travel ice hockey as well as travel baseball. Her family all competes in triathlons and loves to nap when they get a rare break.
Randall Wendt, MD
Dr. Randell Wendt joined the Sandhills Medical Foundation team in 2017.
Karen Clyburn, NP
Site: Lugoff and Camden
Karen joined Sandhills staff in 2011. She has experience with managing acute illnesses and chronic complex multi-system disease processes. Karen has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lander University. Karen received a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Indiana State University. She holds a license from the Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioners.
David Thompson, NP
Site: Lugoff and Camden
David joined Sandhills staff in 2011. David has over 20 years of critical care experience. He served as an Licensed Practical Nurse in the Armed Forces. He received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of South Carolina Upstate and Master of Science in Nursing Indiana State University. David has been a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner since 2008.
Montrice Curenton, NP-C
Montrice comes to us with 20 years of nursing experience, with her background being Med-Surg. She has enjoyed her lifelong learning experience. She received her LPN from Piedmont Technical College in 1997. She received her RN from Regents College in 1999. She received her BSN from Excelsior College in 2011. She later received her MSN from Excelsior College in 2014. She then received her Post Graduate Nurse Practitioner Certification from Maryville University in 2016. She was inducted in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She proudly joined Sandhills Medical Foundation in 2016.
Ashley Tolbert, MSN, CPNP
Ashley joined the Sandhills staff in 2014. She received her Bachelor of Science from USC Upstate in 2009 and her Master of Science in Nursing from The University of South Alabama in 2013. She is a Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and provides services to patients, birth through adolescence. Ashley is also an active member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and 2 dogs, Baylie and Benji.
Ayzia Taylor, MSN, NP

Ayzia Taylor joined the Sandhills staff in 2016. She is a native of Lugoff, SC, graduating from Lugoff Elgin High school in 2003. After high school she attended College of Charleston to complete her B.S. in Psychology. Once completing that degree she knew she wanted to attend nursing school. She has moved up the nursing ranks and started as an LPN in 2009, moving to an RN in 2011. In 2013 she completed her first Masters in Nursing from University of Phoenix, and then later graduated with her second Masters in Nursing from Medical University of South Carolina, concentrating in Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She has been a pediatric nurse for 8 years with a huge passion for patient and parent education. She has inpatient and outpatient pediatric experience, 7 years of pediatric office experience and 4 years of hospital experience at the Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. She is married with 2 children. She loves spending time with her family in and outside of the home.

Temisha Budden, PA-C
Temisha joined Sandhills Medical Foundation, Inc. in Sumter, SC in December 2013. Temisha Harrison Budden was born and raised in Aiken, SC. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from The University of South Carolina. She went on to attend the UMDNJ-Rutgers Physician Assistant (PA) Program and graduated in 2001 with a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. She was later certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Since graduating, she has practiced in the areas of cardiology, emergency medicine and internal medicine, with internal medicine being her area of expertise, with over 12 years of experience. Her passion is the treatment of the entire person (mind, body and soul) with an emphasis on adult preventative medicine. In her leisure, she enjoys spending time with her family, shopping and traveling.
Drew Murphy, MHS, PA-C

Drew joined the Sandhills Medical Foundation team in October 2015. Drew has spent most of his life in Summerville, SC, and he received his Bachelor of Science from Clemson University. After graduating from Clemson, he gained healthcare experience as a Heart and Vascular Technician at the Medical University of South Carolina. Drew attended Duke University and graduated with a Master of Health Science and Physician Assistant Certificate. He was later certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Drew is happy to treat all ages. Drew has a special interest in animal-related illnesses and injuries. In his free time, Drew enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. He is an avid college football, soccer, and comic book fan.
