Sandhills Medical and Kershaw County Schools Team Up to Bring Healthcare to Students and Families

Partnership brings checkups, sports physicals, and behavioral health support into KCSD schools

CAMDEN, S.C., August 04, 2026—Sandhills Medical, a quality-award-winning Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in South Carolina, and Kershaw County School District (KCSD) today announced a new partnership that brings care directly into county schools. During the school year, Sandhills doctors and care teams will offer students checkups, sports physicals, sick visits, and behavioral health support on site at participating schools.

Here is how it works. A parent or guardian completes a consent form for their child. When a medical or behavioral health need comes up at school, a Sandhills nurse calls the parent first, and the student is seen only after that conversation. Visits are billed to insurance the same way a visit to the doctor’s office would be, and depending on a family’s coverage, there may be a cost for the visit. Families without insurance are always welcome, and fees are set on a sliding scale based on what they can afford. No child is ever turned away. Learn more here.

“We want to be where our neighbors already are, and in Kershaw County that means the schools,” said Amanda Duke, CEO of Sandhills Medical. “When a child can be seen at school, we have taken away one of the hardest parts of getting care, which is getting there. Our doors are open to every family.”

The partnership is already at work. Sandhills is on site at the KCSD Summer Meal Program at Blaney Elementary and North Central Middle through July 17, seeing children and parents from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with no appointment needed. The team will also be at registration help days on July 15 and 22 and at Parents Night Out on July 28 to answer questions and help families complete consent forms.

“Healthy students are better learners,” said Harrison Goodwin, Ed.D., superintendent of Kershaw County School District. “This partnership means a child who needs a checkup, a physical, or someone to talk to can get that support as soon as they need it, without a parent taking a day off work. Sandhills shares our commitment to every student, and we are proud to welcome them into our schools.”
